Robert Benesh

Episode 305

Artist: Robert Benesh

Chicago native Robert Benesh was on the path to become a singer-songwriter before he even knew it. His earliest musical experiences involved attending folk music concerts with his father, whose acoustic guitar would ring throughout the house nightly. The romance of a single person on stage with nothing but his instrument and voice has resonated with him ever since those early years. And now, after a lifetime of various musical explorations, Benesh has found a voice that's all his own.

Benesh's lyrics are deeply rooted in a narrative tradition. His songs tell stories of revenge and desperation, laced with a persistent, numbing guilt. He often takes stories on in first person, offering a direct perspective on the motives that drive his protagonists and providing just a shred of sympathy and justification for their actions. Benesh's storyteller lyricism grew especially out of a lifelong love of Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, a record that still inspires him today.
