JOHN KIMSEY ((Twisted Roots/ Medicated Goo)

"I’ve spent a goodly portion of my life working as a musician and both my personal and artist pages on FB focus on musical pursuits. I have a Ph.D. in English Lit and by day (and sometimes night), I’m an Associate Professor in DePaul University’s School for New Learning, where I teach and write about modern literature, popular music and intersections between the two. I’ve published essays in academic journals and anthologies on the work of Mose Allison, Alice Walker, Elvis Presley, Bernard Malamud, James Macpherson, Robert Johnson, Davy Graham and W.B. Yeats. I’ve critiqued the rhetoric of authenticity in rock and have a sideline in what some call Beatle studies, though I prefer the term Fabology. My song cycle, Twisted Roots: Music, Politics and the American Dream Blues, was awarded a DePaul Humanities fellowship in 2002. It’s been described by Ben Sidran, host of NPR’s Jazz Alive and score composer for Hoop Dreams, as “an ingenious way to integrate social and political commentary into a musical architecture” and by peace activist / public intellectual Anthony Nicotera as “music to inspire the soul and charge your commitment to peace and justice.” I try to abide by the words of Prof. Longhair, who said “Tipitina oola molla” and Zeus, who said to Narcissus, “Watch yourself," but will sign off like Louie Louie, as in "me gotta go now." Cheers."

DPM has been playing around Chicago since 2004, doing a variety of tunes from the 40's through 70's by such as: Webb Pierce, Faron Young, Carl Perkins, Gene Watson, Ray Price, Eddie Cochran, Gram Parsons, The Byrds, Louvin Brothers, Everly Brothers, Bob Dylan, Charlie Pride, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, the Flatlanders, Hank Williams and others of that ilk. We opened for Fabulous Thunderbirds a couple years ago and that was a lot of fun. We have an album of originals, “west of California, south of North” (, and an album of classic country covers we recorded live at WBEZ ( Dancers and musicians seem to like us, maybe you will as well!
