Saturday and Company:

Emma Smoler has a degree in music and studied violin performance at Central Michigan University School of Music. Emma currently lives in Chicago and plays violin professionally in a variety of local, national, international, and touring ensembles including classical, jazz, improvisational, country, bluegrass, and pop. Emma has Nashville songwriting credit and sings in country bands in addition to playing fiddle. Born into a family of many professional musicians, Emma has been performing violin, piano, and vocals since she was old enough to hold a microphone. Post graduate, Emma worked as an orchestra teacher at West Intermediate School in Michigan, taught private lessons for numerous students, and was a member of the Midland Symphony Orchestra. Emma’s favorite musical achievement is getting her two children to practice their violins.

Steve Kessler
Lead Vocals, Guitar, Keyboard

Steve, the bandleader, composer and cofounder of the Saturday and Company has been entertaining the Midwest for 20 years. His performing credits include stints with Ooze Magazine, the Pace, Fred Winston band and Chariot (a band which also featured a fellow by the name of Eddie Vedder). Steve and Saturday June Band have performed at Chicagofest, Taste of Chicago, Arlington Race Track, Navy Pier, the Park West and Ravinia, as well as Notre Dame, Northwestern and Marquette Universities and played for both the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls. His bands have shared the bill with such notables as Steve Goodman, the Turtles, the Stranglers, X, the Outlaws, and the Kings. In addition, his guitar and vocal credits include playing live with Hound Dog Taylor and recording with Richie Havens. Chicago Magazine labeled his band "One of the Good Ones" J records (Alicia Keyes, Luther Vandross) VP or A&R, James Diener, has described Steve as a "strong musician and solid composer". He is currently recording his second album.

Jami Dawn
Vocals and Percussion

The Saturday June Band is proud to feature Jami Dawn up front on vocals. Her deep soulful voice has electrified an audience on many an occasion. A talented songwriter and guitar player in her own right, Jami lends the band an extra dimension with her singing and dynamic stage presence. She is a veteran of the Chicago acoustic scene, often appearing at Uncommon Ground with artists like Crystal Bowersox. Her song "Moments" was recently chosen for a new compilation CD of notable Chicago artists.

Phil Circle:

Phil Circle is a veteran Chicago-based singer-songwriter-guitarist and the award-winning author of "The Outback Musician's Survival Guide: One Guy's Story of Survving as an Independent Musician."

Phil Circle has always preferred to pursue his career on his terms, mostly by disregarding the much sought-after “record label” in favor of his own, booking more intimate venues that appreciate the musician and his work, and receiving radio play on stations all over the country and world that look for independent talent.

Phil Circle is by no means your ordinary songster picking away quietly on his acoustic guitar. He manages to blend elements of rock, jazz, blues, folk, and even classical, to seamlessly create a style truly his own. Add to this his often flawless and always energetic live performance, and he lands far away from what most people think of as "Singer/Songwriter."

Phil's debut release in the 90s was hailed by In The Mix as "just what the doctor ordered" and they pointed out that his music "defies rock, jazz and blues" saying his songs were "from the master class." 20 years later, Illinois Entertainer referred to his latest full band effort as proof that Phil is "one of our town's most unique voices."

"Phil Circle's prolific songwriting and powerful performance make him a staple of Chicago music." - Centerstage Chicago Who's Who in Music

Late 2017 and early 2018 saw the release of "ReCircle" and two singles. "What I Mean" and "Belief," trended widely. "What I Mean" was rated among the top 150 singles released in 2017 in Germany and continued to bring new attention to past releases. "ReCircle" is a Limited Edition CD and booklet, numbered and signed, and including previously unreleased songs, no longer available tracks, alternate takes, and a couple live tracks. The end of 2018 brought the unexpected release of a digital album that features one live Circle set in its entirety: "Phil Circle: Live at Uncommon Ground."

Chicago Music Guide said of Phil Circle in a 2018 interview:
"What makes Circle one of the few ‘professional indie musicians’ (where the phrase isn’t an oxymoron) is not only his tenacity, but his inherent fluidity with performing, and a zen-like understanding of what it means to be a songwriter."
